Former President Yushchenko: Let’s Sign The Association With EU First, Free Trade Zone Later

Former President of Ukraine Victor Yushchenko (2005-2010) participated today, Dec 20 in the 2nd round of the negotiations panel to solve the political crisis in Ukraine which has been started after the present President Victor Yanukovych refused to sign an Association Agreement with the EU in November. Despite his yesterday’s reminder and invitation, Yanukovych didn’t join this round table talks. The opposition leaders didn’t participate in the panel as well.

Below are the key today’s quotes by Victor Yushchenko from his interview to Ukrainian press:

On the Association Agreement with the EU

“[The authorities] has not question to it [The Association agreement with the EU]. No one discusses it today. But, what #EuroMaidan does demand? Dear authorities, show your position! Tell us that you don’t guide us via double standards! Signing an Association agreement will show that there’s a choice,” said Yushchenko.

On Visa-Free Regime For Ukrainians

“It [Visa-Free regime with the EU] should be invented for Ukrainian students and youth. We will add 2-3 more categories of people – those who came out to the streets of EuroMaidan. I am sure they have the priority right for it,” said Yushchenko.

On National Security

“You should never compare national security to economic necessity. These are different things. I don’t want my fears to become true, but the logic of the last 350 years confirms them. There will be colonization [from Russia], destabilizing of internal affairs, federalization, hot spot in Crimea, Siversko-Donetsk initiative [declaration of independence of two Eastern regions: Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts], and then scenario like in Southern Ossetia and Abkhazia,” said former President of Ukraine.
